Happy St. Patrick's Day!
Happy St. Patricks Day to everyone celebrating the luck of the Irish today! Let's get into it. Did you know that St. Patricks Day was not always just a day of intense drinking? The day actually has roots in Christianity due to the cannonization of Saint Patrick, The Patron Saint of Ireland. Saint Patrick (nee Maewyn) was born in Roman Britain and brought to Ireland as a slavechild. In his later years he escaped to France where he converted to Christianity, then returned to Ireland as a missionary in the year 432. Patrick became a bishop and after his death on March 17th, 461 was named Ireland's patron saint. The first celebrations in Ireland were not like the ones we have today, those came around the time of The Revolutionary War which is also known as The War of 1776. With the addition of Irish soldiers to the American homefront came the enlargement of the celebration of the life of St. Patrick as a way for the Irish to celebrate their roots.
I think one of the most beautiful parts about living in The United States is the fact that all of our cultures find a way to celebrate their roots and differences. Personally, I think New York City is the best vantage point to see all of these celebrations take place. Fun Fact: Saint Patrick used the three-leaf clover as a symbol for the Father, The Son, and The Holy Ghost. So as you run around in your Shamrocks remember that God is with you, always! :)
